I have been offered a 42 inch reverse cut tiller made by Kobota. Only one year old but used on a large farm, asking price $1700. Does this sound like a good deal to you guys?
I plan to use it on my 27hp tractor in heavy clay soil.

Get one the width of the tractor at a minimum. You do have enough horsepower to run near 60"s without any trouble with a hydro. Are you sure you found a reverse tine? ....

Yes it is a reverse tine tiller and it looks in good shape. I will be using it on Friday to try it out. While I would like a 60" I have not been able to find a good used (affordable) reverse tine tiller in the area.
I like the reverse cut type because they seem to need only one pass to till our high clay soil.
What do you think of this $1700 price, is it in line with your area?

Many of the Kubota tillers sold in the USA are made by Maletti (Italy). You really need to check because a reverse tine tiller takes 25% more HP than a standard tiller of the same length. You can purchase a new 60" tiller for less than $1,000. ....
